#192, or #842, leaving now to go see 2022's "Men."

People always express some doubt when I say I might have a dash of face-blindness but when I first saw it I genuinely didn't realise all the men in the trailer for 2022's "Men" were Rory Kinnear, so.

#193, or #843, let's watch Brendan Fraser do a 90s version of "Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt" or whatever this is about, it's 1999's "Blast from the Past."

#194, or #844. Leaving now for Sneak Preview -- my guess: 2022's "Elvis," maybe?

Every streaming service that has it has been pushing me to watch this for years, let's find out what impression I've given these algorithms, #195, or #845, 2013's "We're the Millers."

#196, or #846, wrapping up the 1930s, 1939 Best Picture nominee "Of Mice and Men."

Just got back from seeing 2022's "Lightyear" with the Brother, #197, or #847.

#198, or #848, another one Netflix has been subtly pushing at me for ages, 2019 Seth Rogen comedy "Long Shot."

#199, or #849, 2006's "The Girl Who Leapt Through Time."

#200, or #850, whatever the fuck 2022's "Spiderhead" is.

#202, or #852, 1980's "The Ninth Configuration," which I understand is an alternative followup to "The Exorcist."

#203, or #853, too hot outside to go to the cinema, so I'm staying inside and watching 1974's "The Taking of Pelham One Two Three."

Leaving now to go see #204, or #854, 2022's "Elvis."

I always look movies up at least a little before I download them, but I don't remember what this one's about at all, #205, or #855, 1988's "Miracle Mile."

Leaving now for Sneak Preview again. #206, or #856.

(No guess. Who even knows!)

#207, or #857, 1996's "Independence Day," which I understand is set mostly on the 4th but starts on the 2nd, so.

#208, or #858, 1940 Best Picture nominee "The Grapes of Wrath."

Another one of those titles you hear all the time, but that I have no idea what they're about. The Great Depression? Probably not fruit.

#209, or #859, the first of these Gundam compilation movies, which, I dunno, I've seen the show, these are like novelisations, I understand historically why they did 'em but you wouldn't necessarily reinvent them today without that history, you know?

1981's "Mobile Suit Gundam I"

Clearing out the old download folder, 2021 alien portal anthology picture, "Doors." #210, or #860.

#211, #861, just got out of the 11am screening of 2022’s “Thor: Love and Thunder.”

Loved it. Thundered it. What more could you want.

Leaving now for a Pride Night screening of 2020's "Kokon." #212, or #862.

#213, or #863, but also Best Picture nominee #100 (or #98, if we're not counting the ones I had to skip) -- 1940's "Rebecca."

Which I'm sure will just be a normal story about a normal woman having a normal, healthy marriage to a normal man in very normal ways.

#214, or #864, let's just do another one of these, 1940 Best Picture nominee "Our Town," which I understand is based on a play sometimes called "the greatest American play ever written," which just means it's bound to be depressing.

I've put on 1981 Gundam compilation film "Mobile Suit Gundam II: Soldiers of Sorrow." #215, #865.

For future compilation films I'll probably listen to the Mobile Suit Breakdown episodes first to see if they consider them worth the effort, but it seems silly to only watch the first of these three.

#216, or #866, I don't remember what this one's meant to be about or why I downloaded it, 1992's "The Player."

#217, or #867, I'm putting on a random American comedy from the mid-2010s, it's 2015's "Vacation."

Let's end this one more time, #218, or #868, 1982 Gundam compilation film "Mobile Suit Gundam III: Encounters in Space."

#219, or #869, leaving now to go see 2022's "The Gray Man."

I understand this is about somebody inheriting a spooky house and spending the night there, so, naturally, #220, #870, 2021 German film "Dawn Breaks Behind the Eyes."

I don't remember what 2014's "The Babadook" is meant to be about but I'm watching 2014's "The Babadook." #221, or #871.

#222, or #872, another day, another two and a half hour long drama about the French, I think?

I don't think these ever work for me.

1940's "All This, and Heaven Too."

#223, #873, another 1940 Best Picture nominee, Hitchcock's "Foreign Correspondent."

I've been describing these as "pre-WW2" but I think this one is firmly just "WW2."

#224, or #874, 1924 Buster Keaton picture "Sherlock Jr."

Do I know anything about this one, not really, can I guess, yeah probably.

I've started a "Detective Conan" reread and figured I ought-a check out some of Aoyama's influences, and people seem to like this movie based on an Edogawa Ranpo detective novel, so, you know, as good a place to start as any.

#225, or #875, 1968's "Black Lizard," (黒蜥蝪, "Kurotokage")

I watched 2015's "Vacation" recently and it's still summer vacation, so let's watch another one of those, #226, or #876, 1983's "National Lampoon's Vacation."

i'm watching the robot movie

#227, or #877, 2008's "Evangelion: 1.11 You Are (Not) Alone."

i'm watching the second robot movie

#228, or #878, 2009's "Evangelion: 2.22 You Can (Not) Advance."

I'm not watching a robot movie, I'm watching 2019's "Us" just to make sure I've seen it before the UFO one comes out. #229, or #879.

Follow

i am once again watching the robot movie

#230, or #880, 2012's "Evangelion 3.33: You Can (Not) Redo"

If this was a 1985 Doctor Who this opening shot would be all anyone ever talked about.

:shinjiposting: "Evangelion 3.33: You Can (Not) Redo" (2012)

Ah, right, the eyepatch.

Been a little timeskip, maybe.

:shinjiposting: "Evangelion 3.33: You Can (Not) Redo" (2012)

a lot going on here

:shinjiposting: "Evangelion 3.33: You Can (Not) Redo" (2012)

I know exactly one thing about this one and it's: None of the stuff from the next time teaser from the last one actually happens in this one.

And indeed, Shinji is not still in the robot.

:shinjiposting: "Evangelion 3.33: You Can (Not) Redo" (2012)

woah hold up

:shinjiposting: "Evangelion 3.33: You Can (Not) Redo" (2012)

This all feels like I've come out of cryo alongside Shinji.

:shinjiposting: "Evangelion 3.33: You Can (Not) Redo" (2012)

"It's time to find out if this ship is capable of deicide."

first of all, hell yeah, second of all, what the fuck is going on

:shinjiposting: "Evangelion 3.33: You Can (Not) Redo" (2012)

"From now on... Don't do anything."

and DEFINITELY do NOT get in the goddamn robot

:shinjiposting: "Evangelion 3.33: You Can (Not) Redo" (2012)

fucking hell that's a big robot

:shinjiposting: "Evangelion 3.33: You Can (Not) Redo" (2012)

somebody in this movie better fucking sit me down and do an exposition dump at me, jesus

:shinjiposting: "Evangelion 3.33: You Can (Not) Redo" (2012)

Misato has successfully killed God.

:shinjiposting: "Evangelion 3.33: You Can (Not) Redo" (2012)

I think this level of, like, punitive control over Shinji is. Totally fair, after the last movie.

:shinjiposting: "Evangelion 3.33: You Can (Not) Redo" (2012)

FOURTEEN YEARS

:shinjiposting: "Evangelion 3.33: You Can (Not) Redo" (2012)

rip Rei, who is definitely inside the Walkman

:shinjiposting: "Evangelion 3.33: You Can (Not) Redo" (2012)

Rei may not be inside the Walkman

:shinjiposting: "Evangelion 3.33: You Can (Not) Redo" (2012)

what the flying fuck is happening

:shinjiposting: "Evangelion 3.33: You Can (Not) Redo" (2012)

okay so

NERV is presumably still NERV, and most of our heroes are with new organisation WILLE that's out to stop NERV from NERVing.

:shinjiposting: "Evangelion 3.33: You Can (Not) Redo" (2012)

but why take ol' Shinj' outta cryo or wherever he was

Leaving now to go see 2022 volcano documentary "Fire of Love." #231, or #881.

Well-told story of two people with a singular shared passion, truly made as good as it is by its access to the archive of incredible volcano footage they shot.

Really, you could tell me this story in two to five minutes, but the footage, all decades old, is /staggering/. You could tell a fart joke on top of this footage and I'd feel blown away.

let's do this one last time

i'm watching the robot movie

#232, or #882, 2021's "Evangelion 3.01 + 1.0: Thrice Upon a Time."

Yeah, you need this Previously On in a part 4 after nine years.

:shinjiposting: "Evangelion 3.01 + 1.0: Thrice Upon a Time" (2021)

Damn, somebody painted Paris.

:shinjiposting: "Evangelion 3.01 + 1.0: Thrice Upon a Time" (2021)

"It's been 16 years."

...since the last movie, or since 2.0

:shinjiposting: "Evangelion 3.01 + 1.0: Thrice Upon a Time" (2021)

This is a lot of technological advancement for 2 years.

:shinjiposting: "Evangelion 3.01 + 1.0: Thrice Upon a Time" (2021)

MARI: *makes the gun noises*

realism

:shinjiposting: "Evangelion 3.0 + 1.01: Thrice Upon a Time" (2021)

"Recognise me?"

hey it's the guy

:shinjiposting: "Evangelion 3.0 + 1.01: Thrice Upon a Time" (2021)

and the other guy

:shinjiposting: "Evangelion 3.0 + 1.01: Thrice Upon a Time" (2021)

"I'm naked, why aren't you getting all hot and flustered!"

asuka you weird goon

:shinjiposting: "Evangelion 3.0 + 1.01: Thrice Upon a Time" (2021)

Real "the more things change the more they stay the same" scenes.

:shinjiposting: "Evangelion 3.0 + 1.01: Thrice Upon a Time" (2021)

I love this.

:shinjiposting: "Evangelion 3.0 + 1.01: Thrice Upon a Time" (2021)

Shinji not loving this.

:shinjiposting: "Evangelion 3.0 + 1.01: Thrice Upon a Time" (2021)

she don't know about cats, she don't know about babies, she don't know about potatoes, she don't know about baths, she don't know about books

:shinjiposting: "Evangelion 3.0 + 1.01: Thrice Upon a Time" (2021)

I really... appreciate this.

:shinjiposting: "Evangelion 3.0 + 1.01: Thrice Upon a Time" (2021)

oh nuts

:shinjiposting: "Evangelion 3.0 + 1.01: Thrice Upon a Time" (2021)

Genuinely don't even know why Misato had him on board last time, never mind THIS time.

:shinjiposting: "Evangelion 3.0 + 1.01: Thrice Upon a Time" (2021)

I love when people say shit like "the former location of the South Pole," like, yes, tell me no more, tell me no less, this is the right amount of telling me things.

:shinjiposting: "Evangelion 3.0 + 1.01: Thrice Upon a Time" (2021)

This fight is at such a scale that I can't even quite process any of it. Everything is huge.

:shinjiposting: "Evangelion 3.0 + 1.01: Thrice Upon a Time" (2021)

Torpedoes made out of whole aircraft carriers, throwing EVAs around like they're BB pellets.

I feel like I'm in kind of a movie rut and I should change it up soon. Maybe start a new The List. Not today, tho.

#233, or #883, 2007's "The Mist," which I assume is about the weather.

well that's one way to signal this is a Stephen King, opening on the main guy painting a Drew Struzan Dark Tower poster

🌫️ "The Mist" (2007)

I think I watched that 2017 TV adaptation of the book, but I don't really remember it.

@Alexis that's

you are the only person who has ever and will ever make this comparison

re: 😱 "Evangelion 3.33: You Can (Not) Redo" (2012)

@Alexis yeah I honestly felt like... 3 and 4 went in a weird direction and I didn't love it.

And it also did a pretty bad job of explaining it all. Expected you to fill in the blanks, or handwaved a lot of character arcs as no longer important.

re: 😱 "Evangelion 3.33: You Can (Not) Redo" (2012)

@The_T I can imagine why especially Anno might wanna do something completely different, writing certain stories off as, well, we've done those.

But this is quite a lot.

re: 😱 "Evangelion 3.33: You Can (Not) Redo" (2012)

@Alexis it really is quite a lot!!!

and it's also super clear to me, from 2, that there was a direction planned for the character's arcs to differ them from the show... and all that was thrown out at some point in between

re: 😱 "Evangelion 3.33: You Can (Not) Redo" (2012)

@The_T We've clearly fully skipped over the period described by the next time trailer, for one thing. (No spoilers, obviously.)

re: 😱 "Evangelion 3.33: You Can (Not) Redo" (2012)

@Alexis it's been a while since I've seen it, so I don't even clearly remember what happens (and which stuff was in 3 and not 4), but.

There is definitely some stuff I just Do Not Like coming up

re: 😱 "Evangelion 3.33: You Can (Not) Redo" (2012)

@Alexis enjoy!

re: 🤖 "Evangelion 3.0 + 1.01: Thrice Upon a Time" (2021)

@Alexis (which guy is it)

re: 🤖 "Evangelion 3.0 + 1.01: Thrice Upon a Time" (2021)

@The_T (it's Toji)

(and Kensuke is here now, too)

re: 🤖 "Evangelion 3.0 + 1.01: Thrice Upon a Time" (2021)

@Alexis oh god, yeah. All the memories of 4 just flooded back to me with this statement

re: 🤖 "Evangelion 3.0 + 1.01: Thrice Upon a Time" (2021)

@Alexis at the end of this, I would really love for you to give a more wordy, in-depth breakdown of what you love. I'd love to read and understand this.

re: 🤖 "Evangelion 3.0 + 1.01: Thrice Upon a Time" (2021)

@The_T It's all very... careful and deliberate, this world after this terrible disaster, just carrying on. It's not a perspective I think of when I think of Evangelion, but I really appreciate getting to see it.
